Event Overview

In accordance with the University of Pittsburgh's commitment to sustainability, the Supplier Management department and members of the university community involved in sustainability initiatives will sponsor a sustainability awareness event, "Blue, Gold and Green", on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, which will be open to all University faculty, staff and students, the public and surrounding Universities. The event will be a daylong collaboration of green suppliers, organizations, speakers, workshops and events brought together to encourage attendees to think about sustainability on and off the campus and help draw participants for the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

 

Showcasing:


Educational sessions - designed to increase awareness of sustainability in our workplace, in our community and in our homes.

University contracted supplier exhibit - featuring their sustainable and GREEN products and programs. Learn more about these Suppliers on the Supplier Exhibit Details page.

University of Pittsburgh departments - featuring informational booths highlighting sustainability projects and initiatives at the University.  Participating departments include: Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, Housing and Food Services, Parking and Transportation, Surplus Property, and the University Times .  Surplus Property will collect used toner cartridges for recycling at their booth.

"Sustain-A-Bowl" - vote for your favorite booth at the Sustain-A-Bowl! Student organizations will be featuring informational booths constructed from salvaged and/or recyclable materials.  They will also display an art and sculpture exhibit made from dumpster diving finds. WPTS will be on site to DJ this event.  All voters will be automatically entered into a drawing for several great prizes including a Blackberry Storm, American Eagle gear and gift sets from Bill Deasy, Alli Gillis Band, No Bad Ju Ju and more!

Sustainable Spaces - visit and walk through offices, a research lab and a dorm room constructed of sustainable materials and produced via sustainable processes. Learn more about these spaces on the Sustainable Spaces page.

Charity Bicycle Build-A-Thon - student participants from surrounding schools will be participating in the Bicycle Build-A-Thon.  Five teams will be competing to see who can build their bike first and win the race! Brand new BMX bikes, a helmet and bike lock will be donated to children from the Hazelwood YMCA and Community Human Services Corporation at the end of the event.  Learn more about this event on the Charity Bicycle Build-A-Thon page.

Who should attend?
This is a free event open to anyone with an interest in learning more about The University’s commitment to sustainability, The City of Pittsburgh’s sustainability initiatives, green products and initiatives from our contracted suppliers, non-profit organizations in the tri-state area and other sustainability topics.   

Where is the event taking place?

The location of the event will be the William Pitt Union and Schenley Plaza.  The William Pitt Union is located at 3959 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15260 and Schenley Plaza is located at 4100 Forbes Avenue, situated between the Carnegie Museums and Library and the University of Pittsburgh Hillman Library.
